For your Entertainment

by Carissa Dunphy on June 30, 2010

Recently I read a research study that concluded that of the women online who are active in social media, 53% read and commented on blogs and news with Entertainment being the subject matter. I thought that percentage was rather high for one subject so I decided I should put my two cents in that giant market. Pondering over the topic, I assessed the websites I visit regularly and determined nearly all of these sites could fall into this category. Therefore, this post will be my own interpretation of what Entertainment is!

Fortunately I was able to narrow down most of my website time into three subcategories: knowledge, socializing and news, which all seem to intertwine anyways. The Internet is a continuously updated collection of knowledge and some people could really benefit from using it more. Often I read things to learn about something so unique the Internet is the only place I know I’ll find the answer, troubleshooting, ideas or research. I am a total geek and I enjoy reading blogs about technology and computers and also about how to better a small business. One great resource is the Learning Forum by Ovaleye Web Solutions. I also read many blogs written by the people I follow on Twitter and Facebook.

This leads me to socializing – since I find many studies and blogs on Twitter and Facebook.  Social media has made its way into many people’s lives and some feel a void when they are unable to login for a day. Social media feeds are definitely entertainment, you can be productive and connect and learn from people you meet or you can purely be entertaining by updating your followers with the day’s events. Lately it seems as though celebrities and people in the public eye use their Twitter or Facebook page to break some news like marriage, retirement, or a venue they’ll be at. News has also made its way to social media. Whenever I hear of any topic that intrigues me I now go to Twitter for up to the second updates. Most news channels have a twitter account as well as a website because twitter is simply so much faster to update than a website.

Finally, news; I don’t know about you but I have all of my local and national news websites bookmarked and I visit them daily. Some news/entertainment websites, like TMZ, build a reputation on reporting stories immediately. It seems as though they either have reporters everywhere or people everywhere know who they can sell stories to. Either way they have the market cornered and have every entertainment story before anyone else.

I am curious how accurate this study is though. What websites do you visit often for your own entertainment?
